Voice Teacher Reacts: Did Billy Joel Use AI Vocals in “Turn the Lights Back On?”
In this video I compared the live singing of Billy Joel from the 66th Grammys with the recording of his studio version of “Turn the Lights Back On” to see if he used AI or not.

Caroline is one of the hardest working vocal students I have on my roster. She has grown so fast in our short time together and no doubt has a bright future ahead of her with her performing and music. Not only have we worked on her voice, but we have also worked on her songwriting and collaborated on her first single…which is a due to drop any minute. I look forward to continuing to be a part o...

    Fascinating - and frightening that commercialization = removal of the humanity of this form of art - as is occurring throughout our culture. Providing more market opportunities for corporations. This dehumanization works hand in hand with corporate growth - marketing geared to create markets based upon commercially imposed/subliminal psychological impact upon humanity which continues the vicious cycle of human insecurity. You point out - that analogy of air brushing and tech manipulation changing the real into PRETEND real - which causes insecurities leading to CREATING a population demand for corporate products … while we lose our love and appreciation for the truth/real. When tech does not PRETEND to be real - but instead is demonstrated itself as an art form for example (electronica music for example) - that there is honest. I myself also enjoy the live and unadulterated Billy Joel voice of today… and I find it warped/sad/scary - that the label (who I figure drives these choices re: production/AI substitution?) - or that Billy Joel himself would be insecure re: the success of an album - which did not portray honesty within talent.

      @SelflessSinging 8 дней назад

      Actually his vowels choices are more pop music influenced than by his Irish IMHO. In general open vowels from that part of the world are more tall than lateral, he has relatively lateral vowels here.

      @@SelflessSinging he’s from Wicklow and I’m from Wexford and we pronounce vowels differently it just comes naturally and while singing songs we Irish can sing one way and change the sound of the vowels by not even trying to it’s just being Irish listen to dermot Kennedy and his vowels are a bit different he’s from Dublin but you can here there accent coming through just by there vowels

    He actually sings the same "ee" note as in the falsetto 'neat' on the belted "ee" in coffee directly afterward in the chorus. It's sung so fully that it's easy to miss. I'm sure the falsetto is entirely stylistic as to lend more dynamism and punch to the note the second time round. It's a very Hozier thing to do - as you ponted to the same dynamic in Take Me To Church Definitely wouldn't sound as rich and emotional without the different dynamic. Just found you today, and appreciate your direct approach to analysis. Any chance you could cover Watch Over You by Alter Bridge (billboard acoustic version). I think it would really suit your kind of analysis.

    what is the best platform to avoid noise cancellation issues? most platforms cancel background noise, which is great for a meeting, but not for a singer. It makes either the voice or the music cancel out. It's super annoying and makes online lessons for me (as the instructor) very unenjoyable.

    Is it correct to say that the lateral cricothyroid muscles only close the vocal folds to a certain extent, whereas the transverse arytenoid muscle closes the vocal folds completely to the point where no sound can be produced?

    nice video but i dont agree with you in 'only transverse arytenoid muscles work, vocalis and cricotyroid muscles are released' thing. lets imagine we are singing a 1 octave scale. When we go up note by note, we can all add fry to them. so when cricoarytenoid are stretched, we can also use fry. if we wouldn't fry would be something like breaking to head voice kind of thing, but we dont feel like we are breaking into fry, we can add it to chest voice, head voice etc. what do you think about that? and where did you learn from that muscle-sound relations? i've been searching for this kind of explanations for years. If there is a source explaining all those i would love to look at it!

  • @lithiumsapphire8935
    @lithiumsapphire8935 3 года назад

    i am a bit confused. some people say that in head voice we only use the ligaments of the vocal cords, but in chest voice we use ligaments+vocalis muscle. is it true? or is it really only about the muscles? and another thing, what is the difference between vocalis and TA muscles, I mean in terms of sound, when we use TA more than vocalis for example, how do i sound and how do i sound vice versa? and lastly i didnt really understand transverse aritnoid muscle, I mean if we dont close our vocal cords with lateral cricoartynoid muscles, it should also sound breathy right? so how do we understand if that breathiness is coming from lateral cricoartynoid or transverse aritnoid muscle? By the way thank you so much for this video. it really explains the mecanism very well. i was looking for this kind of explanation for years. glad someone did that =)
